"Sita sings the blues"

My dear friend Kirsten sent me this delightful animated film about the Ramayana. As you will see for yourself, "Sita Sings the Blues" is truly a beautiful piece of artistry AND a hilarious contemporary rendition of the ancient Indian epic about Rama. I first learned about Ramlila or the performance of the Ramayana, from Derek Walcott's beautiful nobel prize lecture,"Fragments of an Epic Memory" (which you can read or listen to here). It turns out that the Ramlila is performed by Diasporic Indians all over the world, and it is such an important piece that Unesco has bestowed it with the "Third Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity." In any case, this piece is masterful in many, many ways!
